Colleagues of David Chandler shouted “Get out” after the chemical was released.

But while they managed to escape, Mr Chandler collapsed and died at the scene.

Co-workers yesterday described how a thick cloud of smoke formed at the Northampton factory.

Mr Chandler, 45, had been working at the Carlsberg plant in the town on November 9, 2016, when the leak happened. A further 22 people were treated in hospital.

Coroner Philip Barlow said there was “no dispute” to the fact Mr Chandler died “from the inhalation of ammonia”.

He said the questions for the jury at Northamptonshire Coroner’s Court, was how that ammonia came to be discharged and how it could have been prevented.

The jury inquest, which is set to run until July 3, continues.
