Police, Shropshire Council and railway staff closed the footbridge in Bridgnorth over the weekend.

Staff called police to inform them that the bridge leading to the station was in a "potentially dangerous condition."

The bridge was closed on Saturday afternoon and sealed off on both sides with police tape.

Specialist council officers will conduct a thorough inspection before the bridge can be re-opened.

Members of the public were advised by police that the bridge has been closed for their safety and officers said no attempt should be made to cross it until its condition has been checked by qualified personnel.

A spokesperson for Bridgnorth police's Safer Neighbourhood Team said: "Police were informed that staff from the Severn Valley Railway had noticed that the footbridge that leads to the SVR Station was in a potentially dangerous condition.

"They closed the bridge and Police attended and marked up the closure on both sides of the bridge with police tape.

"Police and SVR staff remained in the area until Shropshire Council staff could attend and close both sides of the bridge.

"The two officers who attended are particularly grateful to the kind SVR staff who supplied them each with a cup of very welcome hot tea on a bitterly cold afternoon."
