Fire crews from Bridgnorth and Much Wenlock were called to the blaze at house in the village of Dansford, on the edge of Bridgnorth after the alarm was raised by a neighbour.

Ashley Brown, a firefighter at Bridgnorth station, said crews were called at about 2.50pm and the fire was put out in about an hour.

While the blaze was contained in the bedroom, the whole house was severely damaged by smoke-logging.

Mr Brown said: "On arrival smoke was issuing from the ground floor windows of the property.

"The crews were able to quickly and effectively gain entry into the property using a lock breaking tool recently issued to us. This tool allows us to gain entry to locked premises with minimal damage.

"A small fire involving soft furnishings and a TV was located and extinguished by four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus using two hose reel jets.

"The fire was confined to the one room, however the property has suffered smoke damage throughout. Once extinguished the property was ventilated.

"Also on scene was our partners from the Red Cross who have attended to offer support and guidance to the occupier.

"We should stress the importance of working smoke alarms.

"On this occasion they operated and alerted, not the occupier who was out, but the local neighbour.

"Their swift actions in ringing for the emergency services has ensured that a more severe fire was avoided.

"The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by a trained officer, however it's not believed to be suspicious," he added.
