Welcome to this week's collection of nostalgia photos from the pages of the Shropshire Star.
Here's a question for Dawley folk – do you know your town coat of arms, and the town motto? Well, here they are in a May 1959 picture from our files, when the coat of arms was quite new. As you can see the Latin motto is Trinis Catenis Vinctus which according to Google translate means "on three chains." The young lady is not named, unfortunately. According to a heraldry website "the arms were officially granted on September 10, 1956. The shield's three escutcheons and the motto Trinis Catenis Vinctus alluded to the parishes of St Luke, St. Leonard and the Holy Trinity, and the crest to Captain Matthew Webb."
The old Lloyds Bank in Pride Hill, Shrewsbury, as seen in a picture thought to have been taken in 1960. Despite its Tudor appearance, the frontage bore the date 1876. It was replaced with a modern bank building which won a Civic Trust design award in the late 1960s. The assessor said of the 1960s replacement: “It makes a mockery of the pseudo-traditional and pseudo-modern buildings in Shrewsbury and points the correct way for those with eyes to see.”

Sadly we don't have the names of three lads who were at Ellesmere College back in November 1964, but we can tell you what the original caption said back then: "Ellesmere College is the second public school to open its doors to boys whose parents are unable to afford the fees of independent boarding schools. The college is offering four places for boys in this category in 1965, which brings the total to 14 places for the two Shropshire public schools. Pictured above are three of today's pupils with the college in the background."
A good congregation from many villages attended the annual deanery meeting held at Condover Church on Ascension Day, May 4, 1967. This picture shows clergy who attended the service. On the left are the guest preacher, Dr Marcus Ward, of Richmond Methodist College, London, and the rural dean, Prebendary B L Jones.
This boat was plying the Mere at Ellesmere carrying passengers over 30 years ago. Is that funnel indicative of an engine – or was it just for show? The date we have for this image is April 1988, although we're not sure if that means it was taken then, or first published then (in which case it could have been taken a little earlier).
Although our information is that this is the annual dinner of the staff of Shropshire District of the West Midlands Gas Board at the Adam Ballroom at the Lion Hotel, Shrewsbury, we've also been told that it is the Gas Board Sports and Social Club dinner. The date is 1960 or early 1961. The names of the men (sorry, don't have the women's names) from the left on the top table are Jack Collins, Cliff Bailey, Derek Fallows, unknown, Bill Oldham, unknown, Ted Ryder and Jack Onions.
