Golden glow: Shropshire's picture perfect autumn

Autumn is putting on its best show for years – all thanks to our long hot summer.

The cold snap followed by the weeks of hot weather created the optimal condition for spectacular, bright autumnal hues.

Some trees in Shropshire sported red and amber leaves three weeks early and our county remains a blaze of colour as we go into November.

The Royal Horticultural Society says it is no accident that 2018 will be marked as one of the better autumns for the annual show of leaves.

Plenty of sunshine over the summer encouraged a high concentration of colour pigments in leaves, which has helped to intensify the burnished colours of autumn.

Cooler weather earlier in the year has helped the process, according to experts, as has the arrival of a couple of early overnight frosts in some rural areas.

Shropshire’s rolling landscape is perfect for autumn, which has been a joy for photographers looking to capture a stunning seasonal image.

Many have submitted pictures to the Shropshire Star’s Star Witness gallery.
