This is Worthen United in the 1953 to 1954 season. The picture was loaned by one of the players, Peter Allman, of Shrewsbury. Back row: J.E.G. Sherry (vice chairman), Peter Allman, J. Holloway, Ken Trentham, Dave Roberts, Trevor Bishop, R. Williams. Front: Eddie Phillips, John Green, John Maddox, E. Williams, Harold Morris, P. Davies. Mr Allman said: "I was 17 at the time and we played in the Shrewsbury & District League. We used to play against teams like Hanwood, Pontesbury, and Snailbeach. It could get feisty. I was defence, probably right back. After than I went into the forces and played for the army depot team, the Royal Engineers Postal Section in London. Once I played against Phil Woosnam, a Welsh amateur international, who went to America and I think started the football in America. Before I got demobbed I was on Fulham's books as an amateur. When I was demobbed I played for Wellington Town for a bit in the Cheshire League. I was about 27 when I packed up. I had a couple of bad leg injuries." Along the way Mr Allman had also played for the county youth side, the county amateurs, and Shrewsbury schoolboys.
