Another five Covid deaths confirmed in county as UK records highest death toll yet

Figures from NHS England confirmed the patients had died while in the care of Shrewsbury & Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH).

It continues a grim escalation of the situation in the county.

A total of 388 people have now died with the virus at county NHS trusts since the pandemic began – 360 at SaTH, 22 at Shropshire Community Health Trust, and six at the The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital near Oswestry.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) also show that 218 people have died with Covid in the county's care homes – 161 in Shropshire and 57 in Telford & Wrekin.

The ONS figures also show that 154 people have died with the virus in Powys.

Another 1,820 Covid deaths have been confirmed across the UK today, taking the total to 93,290 – the biggest figure reported in a single day since the pandemic began.

It comes after yesterday also saw the previous highest death toll of 1,610.
