After Sophie Dorey started a JustGiving page to help supply personal protective equipment (PPE) to frontline workers in Wem and Whitchurch, she was inundated with donations and materials.

The 32 year-old from Wem said she wanted to do something to help when she came across shop and care home workers who were running out of PPE.

Around £250 was raised from the page she set up and people of Wem also donated their time, effort and any materials they could to help distribute PPE.

"I was in Home Bargains in Whitchurch and the lady at the till said she was running out of PPE, so I gave her a mask I had," Sophie explained.

"Then on my way home, I thought that's not right. I put out a JustGiving page on Facebook and I received some amazing donations from different people because they saw it.

"It was incredible. So many people helped, my father and step-mother run the White Lion in Wem, and they donated hand sanitiser and a cash donation.

"Neil Boxall who owns Sport and Country in Wem also gave hand sanitiser. Chris Hanmer who works for Hawk gave visors, and Chris’s mother Brenda made so many washable cotton masks.

"Amanda Edge and Judge Morgan, and several others, also donated PPE materials."

Sophie said with all the donations and money, they managed to provide for four care homes, three medical practices and a locum GP and around 20 members of the public.

She said it was amazing to see the community come together so fast.

"We need supermarkets and care homes to be open and functioning," she added. "If you can give just a little, it can go a long way."
