Coronavirus: Updates as Midland hospital death toll passes 1,000

Forty-three more Covid-19 deaths have been confirmed at hospitals in the Black Country, Staffordshire and Birmingham, taking the total number of deaths to 1,030.
A further three coronavirus patients have died at the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust, taking the total deaths at Shropshire hospitals to 43.

Ministers are resisting demands for an emergency recall of Parliament to respond to urgent questions about the coronavirus outbreak. Commons Leader Jacob Rees-Mogg has insisted MPs will return on April 21, the date agreed before the Easter recess.
A third of surgeons and trainees across the UK do not believe they have an adequate supply of protective equipment to do their job safely, new research has found. A survey of nearly 2,000 surgeons and surgical trainees, published on Sunday, also found that 57% said there had been shortages of personal protective equipment (PPE) at their organisations in the last 30 days.
The Archbishop of Canterbury has urged people not to “let fear dominate” and said that he hoped the coronavirus crisis would encourage them to reconsider how they valued one another. Justin Welby said churches had to set an example on how to behave during the “challenging times” – adding that it was “not complicated”.
The Queen has stressed the importance of maintaining the coronavirus lockdown during the Easter Bank Holiday weekend, saying “by keeping apart we keep others safe”. With the Covid-19 outbreak making church services impossible, the Queen has delivered what is believed to be her first Easter address, which had the resolute message: “We know that coronavirus will not overcome us.”
