Three wards will remain closed at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital this weekend due to the norovirus outbreak.

Shrewsbury & Telford Hospital NHS Trust, which manages the hospital, had closed two wards to new admissions and visitors on Tuesday after it confirmed five cases of norovirus – also known as the winter vomiting bug.

Wards 24 and 28 were closed initially, and ward 27 was later added to the closure list.

Ward 27 was able to reopen on Thursday but has since been closed again.

The trust says it will review the situation on Monday.

The affected wards will not be able to accept visitors unless there is a clinical need or a patient receiving end of life care.

Hospital staff have appealed to people only to visit the hospital if necessary and to take all appropriate actions to help prevent the spread of infection.

Norovirus is a stomach bug that causes vomiting and diarrhoea, which goes away in about two days.
