At a meeting of the NHS Future Fit Programme Board last month, members renewed their recommendation that an emergency centre should be based at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, while the majority of day case surgery should be carried out at Telford’s Princess Royal Hospital.

The recommended plans – as well as proposals that would see an emergency services centre at Telford – is now set to go to public consultation.

The Labour Party in Telford said they were "very disappointed but sadly not surprised" by the decision.

The chair of the Telford Labour Party, Councillor Kevin Guy said: "The Telford Labour Party will continue to fight against the proposed closure of the 24 hour A&E service at the Princess Royal Hospital. We as your local Labour party will ensure the voice of the people of Telford is heard and their views are listened to."

Telford & Wrekin Council leader Councillor Shaun Davies said: “We are very disappointed that the committee chose to ignore the very valid points that the council has repeatedly raised over the last 11 months about what we believe is a deeply flawed Future Fit process.

"All we have repeatedly asked for is a process that is fair, legal and transparent. “

They said the council's PRH4Me campaign would now be gathering pace.
