Telford care home makes 'significant improvements' but further work needed

A care home placed in special measures after being rated ‘inadequate’ in a Government inspection has made improvements but more needs to be done.

That is the message from the Care Quality Commission, which placed St Georges Park, in Telford, in special measures following an inspection last October.

Care home bosses were warned it could face closure if it does not get back up to scratch.

A re-inspection took place in February and the results have now been made public in a newly published report.

During the inspection, the health watchdog looked at whether the service was safe and well-led and viewed that these areas now “required improvement”.

At the inspection last year, it was rated ‘inadequate’ in all five categories, including whether the service was effective, caring and responsive. The home, in School Street, St Georges, is managed by Rotherwood Healthcare.

The report said there had been “significant improvements” but further work was needed.

Inspectors said staff did not always recognise where their practice created a risk to peoples safety.

The report said: “Systems in place to check on the quality of care people received were not always used effectively to drive improvements. Staffing levels were not routinely assessed to ensure there continued to be enough staff to meet people’s needs.”

Inspectors said there had been sufficient staff to meet people’s needs and staff were “safely recruited”.

They also noted improvements in the leadership and management. But the report said people did not always receive their medicine as prescribed.

It said: “Staff did not always use the systems in place to ensure people were receiving their medicines as prescribed and there had been some medicine errors, however the provider was working to ensure these issues were addressed.”

The overall rating of the service remains ‘inadequate’. The home will be kept under review by the CQC.

Fred Fennel, Rotherwood Healthcare’s director of quality assurance, said: “We have seen massive improvements at St Georges Park. It is a step in the right direction.

“Most importantly the local authority has moved us from a level four to a level two rating meaning the risk factor has moved from high right down to low.

“Three months on from this latest inspection carried out in February we are very proud of the improvements made.”
