The Vicarage Nursing Home in Bayston Hill provides accommodation and care for people with dementia and other diseases.

It has been rated as requiring improvement after inspectors from the Care Quality Commission found issues in the safety and effectiveness of its service.

Inspectors from the health watchdog visited the home on The Common in November and have released a report into their findings.

After a previous inspection in February, the home was rated as inadequate overall, being placed in special measures.

Today, CQC officials said that while the service at The Vicarage had improved since its previous inspection, it still required improvement to ensure the service was safe and effective for its residents. Their report said there were 35 people living at the home at the time of the inspection, but there was no registered manager in post.

It said: "At this inspection, we found the provider had made significant improvements to the service.

"However, people still did not always receive safe support from staff to move.

"We saw two members of staff use an inappropriate lifting technique to help a person move from their wheelchair to an armchair. The use of this technique put both the person and the staff at risk of injury. It also contradicted the guidelines in the individual's assessment.

"We spoke with the staff members involved who confirmed they had completed moving and handling training, but did not understand the risks associated with the lifting technique used."

Inspectors praised staff for their caring and compassionate approach to their jobs. It also noted that relatives of peopl at the home were confident their family members were cared for safely.

Nobody from The Vicarage was available for comment.
