Worldwide entertainment at our big concert

Following our Shropshire Federation of Young Farmers Clubs' annual rally, the next big events in our calendar are the famous Shropshire YFC chairman's ball, which is on August 26, and the chairman's charity concert on August 24 which has kindly been sponsored by Madeleys Chartered Surveyors of Much Wenlock.

With the theme of “Around the World,” this year the events are being held in Cleobury North.

At the chairman's charity concert each of the 18 clubs will pick a country and create a performance to that theme. Expect to see Western singing, Russian ballet dancers and the French can-can.

The annual concert uses the marquee in which we host the chairman's ball, and raises money for our chosen charities. These are Oak Farm at Ditton Priors, the Midlands Air Ambulance, and Breast Cancer Care.

This year the concert will be particularly special as we will be presented our Queen's Award for Voluntary Service. All YFC members, friends, family and supporters are welcome to attend the concert in what promises a proud evening of thrilling performances.

In our annual rally last month hundreds of Shropshire young farmers flocked together to compete in over 70 competitions. The rally theme was Wild West and the venue was Westwood Farm.

Competitions ranged from decorating a cake to the Wild West theme and making a cowboy's waistcoat, to plasticine tepees and flower arranging.

Skills were put to the test in stock judging, brick laying and shearing competitions, as well as in a carpentry competition where members raced against the clock to build some very impressive western-style saloon swing doors. Dancing, sketches and a competition to lasso a mechanical moving bull made for some great entertainment for all. In true young farmers style the day finished with some hilarious fun with an assault course and a celebratory after Rally Dance.

Once the points had been counted, Brown Clee YFC were crowned 2017 rally champions. Taking the winning title in 2016 too, they were outstanding in the field taking away an impressive nine out of the 18 trophies awarded on the day.

Chris Potter, the rally committee chairman, commented: “Congratulations to all those who competed and supported this year’s rally. The standard of competition was as high as ever and it was a fantastic day for all involved.”
