Generation Zero Carbon Shropshire is a collective of young Shropshire-based people working to encourage everyone in the county to help achieve the necessary conditions to reduce emissions to net zero by 2030.

The group was founded by a small team of young adults aged 18-26 and has been growing in membership even before today's official launch date, which coincides with Earth Day.

Their aim is to create a space where young people can be part of the transition to a zero carbon economy and the protection of our planet by empowering them to push for changes and have a positive, transformative impact on their own community.

Deborah Murphy for the group said: "Young people today are growing up in fear of a future of climate breakdown; a future comprised of drought, food shortages, extreme weather events and mass extinction of species. The situation seems so bleak it’s easy to forget that we still have time to turn it around and prevent such catastrophe.

"Generation Zero Carbon Shropshire gives young people an effective and meaningful way to engage with the biggest threat of our time. It’s essential that we do not give up hope; the value of taking action to transform our own community, our own small patch of the world, cannot be underestimated."

Competitions

The group is urging others from all walks of life to get involved across the county.

"With plans to get involved in everything from re-wilding to community events to working with local businesses, there is a role for any young person who is interested."

To celebrate today's launch the group is running two competitions.

Young people are invited to write a short story/poem/song or rap lyric responding to the title ‘Me and the Sixth Mass Extinction' or produce a piece of art or photography which responds to the desire to protect Shropshire by achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2030 entitled ‘Around the Wrekin’.
