Newport Town Council is organising a photographic competition to encourage people to embrace the 'Choose Newport' campaign of promoting the town as it recovers from the coronavirus pandemic.

A statement said: "Newport Town Council are on a mission to ensure that our High Street returns to the vibrant place it was prior to Covid-19's intervention, and that it comes out of it even better than before, by encouraging visitors and providing our residents with a sense of wellbeing and pride for our wonderful town.

"As part of the recovery programme at a recent meeting, councillors recommended that the council should hold a Newport photographic competition for entrants' photos to be included on a Newport Town Calendar for 2022 to promote the town and make it a destination of choice for those who see the photos, the theme: 'Choose Newport'.

"The competition is now open, but it must be stressed that Newport Town Council are not advocating breaking lockdown rules to take photographs."

Submitted photographs should show off an element of the town looking its best (for example the High Street, canal walks, landscapes or town events) and should be printed to A5 size.

Conditions

They should also be available to be supplied on a USB stick.

Entry is free, but photographs should be donated without copyright restrictions for the town council to use for promotional purposes apart from the council.

Only entries from people who live within the four wards of Newport will be accepted.

No age restrictions apply. Photographs should be printed and have the photographer's name, address and postcode attached to the back, to be handed into the Guildhall for judging by no later than Friday, April 30.

A panel of judges will choose the winners in the week commencing May 10.

Winners will be notified by post and a presentation for the contributors of the top three will be held, subject to Covid-19 restrictions, during May.
