Woman tries to abduct girl outside a Telford school

A woman tried to get a young girl to get into her car outside a Telford school.

Police say they are "extremely concerned" about the incident, where the woman, driving a grey or silver coloured car, tried to get the youngster into the vehicle outside Hadley Learning Community.

The girl declined and ran off to inform staff, but police are investigating the incident and say they are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen anything between 2.50pm and 3.10pm on Monday afternoon.

Detective Inspector Jason Everett said: "We're extremely concerned about this incident which has been traumatic for the victim but which could have been a lot more serious.

"I want to reassure residents and parents that we are continuing to conduct patrols in the area. Likewise, the girl involved and her family are being supported by specialist officers.

"We would encourage parents to speak with their children about talking to strangers. We would ask children to never go off with anyone they do not know, get into a vehicle with a stranger, accept gifts off a stranger or wander off on their own.

"We are very keen to speak to anyone who was an in the area at this time or who saw anyone acting suspiciously."

Erica Aston, headteacher of the primary phase at Hadley Learning Community said: "We've been working very closely with the police since the incident happened yesterday.

"We have sent a letter home to parents informing them of the suspicious incident outside the school, reassuring them that the child wasn't harmed and that it has been taken very seriously. They've also been sent a copy of the statement the police have released.

"The safety of children is of the utmost importance to us."
