70 firefighters tackle blaze at Shropshire industrial complex

About 70 firefighters tackled a fire at a commercial premises near Shawbury in the early hours of this morning.

Emergency services were called to Smithers Rapra, which works in the polymer, rubber and plastic field, at 2.13am.

The fire involved a 100m x 80m building, of which about 60% has been saved, Shrewsbury-based station commander James Bainbridge tweeted this afternoon.

Thirteen crews were drafted in from Baschurch, Craven Arms, Hodnet, Oswestry, Shrewsbury, Telford and Wem. Operations, Hazmat and Safety officers were also in attendance.

In use were the aerial ladder platform, the incident command unit, the incident support unit, the light pumping unit and the water carrier. Police were also at the scene.

By daybreak the fire had been contained and crews were damping down.

At 11am four crews remained on the scene.
