Firefighters said that the man was uninjured but a little embarrassed after two crews from Wellington were needed to help him down.

Fire engines were parked near the Buckatree Hall Hotel in Ercall Wood, and rescuers had to trek through the woodland with ladders and equipment to get to where the climber was stuck.

The man, who called for help at just after 10.45am, was put on a line and pulled to safety. He was safely back on solid ground by 11.50am.

John Pritchard, watch manager at Wellington Station, said that the climber had reported he was stuck about 4m from the ground, which proved not to be accurate.

But the change in height didn't alter how they tackled the problem.

He said: "We approached the climber from the top of the rock face.

"After a long trek around, we managed to get above him. We used nearby trees as an anchor point.

"The climber was fine. He he got stuck when the rock became unstable above him and below him."

Mr Pritchard said that it had taken about 20 minutes to walk up The Ercall, and around 30 minutes to rescue the climber.

A spokesman for Shropshire Fire and Rescue said: "One male stuck after climbing too high and unable to get down.

"Crews proceeded on foot with extension ladder and line safety gear. One male was rescued using line safety gear.

Wellington Fire Station tweeted pictures from the scene of the rescue:

This is just the latest rescue firefighters have had to perform on Ercall Hill.

At the beginning of June, three-legged dog Bracken ran off to chase birds and found himself stuck 15 feet from a massive drop.

The springer spaniel was rescued by the fire service after it became clear nobody else would be able to reach him.
