Blazing van stops rush hour traffic in Shropshire

Rush hour traffic was brought to a standstill as flames leapt from the bonnet of a commercial van this afternoon.

Plumes of black smoke were pouring into the sky above the A442 Shawbirch Roundabout in Wellington, where the burning van had stopped in the middle of the road.

One team of firefighters were sent from Wellington after being called at 4.41pm and two jets and two sets of breathing apparatus were used to put out the flames.

Police were called to the area to help with traffic management.

The cause of the blaze has not yet been discovered.

Wellington Station took to Twitter to share details and pictures of the fire. They wrote: "Severe traffic disruption in local area."

A spokesman for Shropshire Fire and Rescue said: "At 4.41on on Tuesday, June 28, Shropshire Fire and Rescue Fire Control received a call reporting a fire classified as Car Fire in Wellington.

"One crew was mobilised from Wellington. The police were also at the scene of the incident. Police assisted with traffic management."
