Man dies in two-car crash

A motorist who died after suffering injuries in a two vehicle collision near the Shropshire/Welsh border was an elderly man from north Shropshire, police have confirmed.

The fatal crash involving a silver Mini and a silver Suzuki Alto happened last night on the A539 at Hanmer near Whitchurch, leading to the road being closed for some time while officers investigated the collision.

The driver of the Suzuki, who has not yet been named, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Mini, a female in her 30s, was taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital with shoulder, chest and leg injuries.

A North Wales Police spokesman said: "North Wales Police attended to a report of a two vehicle collision on the A539 at Hanmer, Whitchurch, involving a silver Mini and a silver Suzuki Alto.

"North Wales Police can confirm that the male driver of the Suzuki vehicle sustained fatal injuries following the collision.

"The road was closed while the collision was investigated and reopened at 1am.

"Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information should contact officers at the Road Policing Unit on 101 or on 0300 330 0101."

Firefighters from Wrexham were also called to the scene to assist with the release of one of the casualties in the crash.

A North Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: "We were called at 9pm to a two vehicle road traffic collision involving two casualties.

"We assisted in the release of one of the casualities."

She said the fire crew were at the scene until 11.15pm.
