Shrewsbury boxing club gutted in arson attack

Arsonists have targeted an amateur boxing club in Shrewsbury in a late night attack causing thousands of pounds of damage.

The John Davies Boxing Centre, on Smithfield Road, which has been used by more than 250 members of the Shrewsbury Amateur Boxing Club for the past decade, has been gutted in a fire which ripped through the building at midnight last night.

Club bosses, who set up the club 52 years ago, have been left 'devastated' by the attack, which has seen more than £15,000 worth of boxing equipment destroyed.

Up to 10 firefighters as well as officers from West Mercia Police were called to the scene.

Detectives are now investigating the attack and scouring hours of CCTV footage after confirming they believe it to be arson.

Telford man Graham Robb, who runs the club, said the boxing centre had been destroyed.

He said: "We got the call at about midnight to say the club was on fire. We understand there was a break-in at the club and a flat screen television was taken.

"There was just nothing left – there must have been up to £15,000 worth of equipment which had been destroyed. We're devastated."

Police are asking any witnesses to call 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
