Oakengates Children's Centre, which has a nursery for two to four-year-olds, has been given an overall rating of "requires improvement" by Ofsted following an inspection in September.

A report into the inspection said teaching was "not consistently good" and some staff did not support and challenge children well enough to reach their full potential because they lack a clear understanding of what children should be able to achieve at any particular age.

However, inspectors highlighted some strengths including that children were very well cared for and all staff ensure that children’s safety is of "paramount importance".

Telford & Wrekin Council says the authority will continue to support the nursery to make further improvements.

Council spokesman Chris Kowalik said: "Ofsted recognises a number of strengths including leadership and management within the children centre.

"The report praises work undertaken to improve practice since April 2016, when the children’s centre was federated with Wrockwardine Infant and Nursery School.

"Telford & Wrekin Council will continue to support the school in making further improvements with a view to the centre reaching a standard of good or better across all areas, as quickly as possible.”

Both the quality of teaching and outcomes for children were judged as requiring improvement by Ofsted, however it was rated "good" for leadership and personal development, behaviour and welfare.

The nursery, based at The Place in Oakengates, has 101 children on roll.

At a previous inspection in 2013, the children's centre had been rated "outstanding" across the board.
