International students contribute £3 billion to the West Midlands economy
There are more than 29,000 students in the West Midlands, delivering a net impact to the region of £3 billion, a new report has revealed.
The report: "The benefits and costs of international higher education students to the UK economy" has been released in partnership with Universities UK International, the Higher Education Policy Institute and Kaplan International with London Economics.
It was commissioned to explore the economic impact of international students on the UK economy.
With the UK experiencing its biggest net migration increase on record, the new report has revealed that international students brought in £42 billion to the UK economy in the 2021/22 academic year, with £3 billion generated in the West Midlands alone.
Across the region, unsurprisingly, Birmingham received the highest net income from international students, who brought in more than £909 million to the city's economy.
Meanwhile, in Shropshire, international students added more than £184.5 million to the county's economy in 2021/22.
