The Columns magazine has been relaunched

Shaz Raja, 17, and Brandon Low, 17, of Shropshire's Concord College, have just published the first new edition of the Columns magazine since 2018.

The edition contains insightful articles on healthcare systems, migration, depression, international differences and collaboration as well as food, debating and book recommendations.

According to the duo, the magazine provides a platform for students to write about topics and experiences about which they are enthusiastic as well as providing a ‘new academic focus'.

It also includes the winning essay, on climate change, for the university of Cambridge’s annual Compass magazine competition won by Concord’s Barney Cansdale, a British day student aged 16 in 6.1.

Speaking of the student uptake in the relaunch, Brandon said: “We have had lots of contributions from students and support from members of staff.

“The new magazine is a fantastic opportunity to share enthusiasm and aspirations for university, refining English skills, writing formal EPQ and blog-style articles as well as generally creating informal and engaging entries.

“I also think it provides added value to be able to list such extracurricular activities to your CV or to hone writing skills that will help when it comes to UCAS applications and personal statements.”

For students who wish to regularly take part, Shaz and Brandon have announced that students contributing to several magazine editions will be granted the title and role of ‘Columnist’ – and receive a special feature at the end of the magazine.

They believe this will also help to ensure the longevity of the college magazine with younger students able to develop and take up leadership of the ‘Columns’ in future years.

The magazine has been published via a virtual Flipbook and PDF with limited hard editions also being available soon.
