Sports students in Telford got their hands on the Football League Championship trophy – thanks to a partnership with Wolverhampton Wanderers FC.

Wolves, who topped the Championship this season to earn a return to the Premier League, run a BTEC diploma in sports performance and excellence course at Telford College.

Students get trips to the Wolves training facility as part of their studies, gain access to first team squad members and visit Molineux on a regular basis to work with the community trust.

And the club was anxious to ensure students got chance to share in the championship-winning excitement, by bringing the famous trophy down the M54 to Telford College’s Haybridge campus.

Jonny Warburton, education development officer at Wolves, said: “It was a pleasure to be able to showcase the Championship trophy with the Wolves students here at Telford College.

“This is one of the many perks a Wolves student receives as part of the course, which has included trips to Molineux and Compton training ground to see the ins and outs of an elite sporting environment.”

Jason Jones, sports tutor at the college, said: “It was great to be able to showcase the Championship trophy here with the first and second year level three BTEC Sports Wolverhampton Wanderers groups.

“This, along with other enrichment activities made available in conjunction with Wolverhampton Wanderers, really enhances the students’ sporting experience here at the college.

“It helps them to engage more with their studies, and gives them a good idea of what it is like in the professional sporting environment.

“It’s great to be able to say that we now have a partnership with a Premier League football club, and we wish Wolves good luck with their top-flight campaign next season.”
