Top marks for college cafes

A restaurant and cafe run by students at a specialist college has won a maximum five star Food Hygiene Rating in a recent inspection.

The Derwen College's Orangery Restaurant and Garden Café at Gobwen provide training and work experience for students with learning disabilities and our popular eating spots for local people. Students also run the busy Station Cafe at Gobowen railway station.

The five star Food Hygiene Rating in a recent inspection saw top marks given to all catering areas in the college including the restaurant and cafe.

Principal director, Meryl Green said: "The score is testament to the high standards of cleanliness, hygienic food handling and food safety adhered to by students and staff working at the college."

The Orangery Restaurant and Garden Café are open daily from 10am-3.30pm.

The food hygience score is the latest accolade for Derwen college which has earned a reputation for delivering outstanding provision and has been judged ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted on three consecutive inspections.

It has recently been shortlisted for two awards in the national TES FE Awards. The college

has been nominated for Specialist Provider of the Year Award and Employer Engagement Award.
