St Andrew's CE Primary School was forced to close some of its classes yesterday because of the flood, which was caused by a burst pipe.

The flood affected the key stage one area of the school and meant classes one to four had to close to pupils.

However, the school remained open as usual for classes five and up.

The flood also destroyed four bookcases filled with picture books.

Headteacher Aileen MacMillan said: "The pipe has been spraying water, probably for most of the weekend.

"It flooded the key stage one area. "It's damaged about four bookcases full of books. Eighty per cent of the picture books have been ruined."

She said classes one to four had to close to pupils, but the pipe has now been fixed and pupils were expected to be able to return today.

Ms MacMillan said the school will eventually be able to claim on insurance to replace the ruined books, but in the meantime pupils may have to do without the resources.

She has appealed to the community for any help that people or businesses may be able to offer.

Ms MacMillan added: "If anyone can help or has any good second-hand books please get in touch."

The school can be contacted on 01952 460226.
