Telford school out of special measures

A school has come out of special measures after more than two years – but Ofsted inspectors say standards still need to improve.

Mount Gilbert School, in Dawley, Telford, was put in special measures in 2014 by the education watchdog.

But a newly published Ofsted report, following the most recent inspection in July, shows the school's rating has improved from 'inadequate' – the lowest standard – to 'requires improvement'.

The report said: "Her Majesty's Chief Inspector is of the opinion that the school no longer requires special measures."

However, inspectors said pupils did not do well enough in mathematics and in science.

They also said that the quality of learning, teaching and assessment was "variable" and not all teachers consistently apply the school's assessment and behaviour policies.

The report said: "As a result, pupils are unsure about how to improve their work or correct their mistakes and their poor behaviour is sometimes unchallenged."

Attendance records have improved but Ofsted said they were still below national figures and too many pupils were "persistently absent" from school, missing more than 10 per cent of lessons. The report was also critical that pupils' handwriting skills were not well developed.
