Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) officers have been trying out technology from SmartWater: a handheld spray that can be applied to off-road riders as they go past, then tracked down later.

The spray will mark the rider, the bike and their clothe and will remain visible under UV lights, allowing officers to track them.

Pc Lee Thomas of the Newport SNT is among those hoping to be trained in the use of the sprays.

He said: "It isn't something the public can buy and use – it's being trialled by the SNTs across Telford when dealing with reports of nuisance off-road or untaxed uninsured motorbikes on roads, parks or other public places.

"The officer literally sprays the rider and bike as they go past and the solution sticks to them, their clothing and the bike. It's just like a small fire extinguisher in appearance and used in the same way, point and press – very simple in operation."

Incidents can be reported to police on 101, or in an emergency, 999.
