Dominic Zacharski was jailed for three years for handing over heroin and crack cocaine in St Julian’s Friars.

Police found him in the popular riverside area surrounded by drug users as he carried out his trade.

Mr Simon Worlock, prosecuting, told Shrewsbury Crown Court that police seized several wraps of heroin and crack cocaine from him on August 16. They were hidden inside the plastic container of the chocolate egg.

About £300 in cash and a mobile phone were also seized.

Mr Worlock said: “This is an organised supply. There are messages going back and forwards asking him whether there were drugs available. The view of the crown is that he’s working on behalf of organised crime and his benefit is likely to involve his own drug misuse.”

Zacharski, of Castle Foregate, Shrewsbury, admitted two counts of being in possession of Class A drugs with intent to supply.

Miss Debra White, representing Zacharski, said her client had been using illegal substances since the age of 16 or 17.

She said: “The reason he became involved in drug dealing on this occasion is because he owed £800 to those who provided him with drugs in the past.

“He became engaged in this activity in order to pay back that debt.”

She said he had pleaded guilty at the first opportunity.

Miss White added: “This is street dealing. The question for the court is whether this was a significant role or a lesser role.”

Sentencing Zacharski to three years in prison, Judge Peter Barrie said: “You have a long record of having used drugs throughout your adult life. It is brought you many times to court for minor offences of dishonesty, stealing to get the money no doubt to get drugs. Now it’s brought you to court as a drug dealer.”

He said information found on the mobile phone indicated he had 24 customers.

Judge Barrie said he may only have been found in possession of a small amount of drugs this time, but added: “There’s clear evidence this was a transaction that was part of regular and systematic dealing to a range of customers.”

He said he would take into account that Zacharski had pleaded guilty to the offences but that he had played a “significant role”.

Judge Barrie ordered the forfeiture and destruction of the drugs and the confiscation of the cash which was recovered from the defendant.
