Derek Whyteside, aged 42, of Chesterfield Road, Dawley, died after being assaulted in Withywood Drive, Malinslee, in June.

A 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Stafford Crown Court via video link yesterday accused of his murder.

Wearing a grey jumper, he spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and nationality.

William Owens, 41, and Gareth Owens, 39, are both charged with affray and also appeared at the same court yesterday.

They spoke only to confirm their names.

None of the defendants entered pleas to any of the charges.

Judge Michael Chambers QC adjourned the case until September 14 when they are all due to enter pleas at Stafford Crown Court.

If the case does head to a trial, it is expected to take place in November.

Mr Whyteside was taken to Princess Royal Hospital in Telford before being airlifted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

He was found unconscious on June 18 and later died of his injuries.

The youth was remanded in custody following yesterday's brief hearing, while the other two defendants, both of Boulton Grange, Randlay, were released on conditional bail.

Last month, detectives investigating the murder said no action would be taken against a woman and two youths who were arrested following Mr Whyteside’s death.
