Cheryl Gabriel-Hooper: Newport shooting suspect still in hospital months later
Nearly four months after her death, the man arrested for killing a mother outside her Newport home is still in hospital.
Cheryl Gabriel-Hooper was shot in the neck and killed on January 26, and a 45-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder shortly after.
Today police confirmed he was still receiving medical treatment for gunshot wounds.
The cause of his injuries is not being treating as suspicious.
Two police forces are still being investigated by the Independent Office for Police Conduct after it emerged Ms Hooper, 51, had reported incidents to police in the weeks leading up to her death.
West Mercia Police and Staffordshire Police had both had contact with the victim. Both police forces referred themselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
Cheryl's death led to an outpouring of grief from the Newport community, which also banded together to raise funds in her name.
About £6,130 has now been collected for her family. There have been almost 190 supporters for the cause.
