A pile of more than 20 fridges and freezers, along with a broken down caravan and other household waste have been dumped.

The items were thrown into the undergrowth at Corbet Wood car park, a popular area for walkers close to Grinshill, just north of Shrewsbury.

Two white Ford box vans were seen on Sunday night travelling to the car park, one towing a caravan.

Alerted by the noise, nearby residents investigated but they found that both vehicles had had their number plates obscured.

Officers from West Mercia Police were informed immediately and a police car was on the scene within a couple of hours.

But it wasn’t until daybreak that those living nearby were able to see exactly what had been going on. Thrown into the woodland were fridges and freezers, some intact, others with their doors hanging off from their hinges.

Both the police and Shropshire Council have been informed and a clear-up operation was under way yesterday afternoon.

A police spokesman said: “CCTV footage will be studied but sightings of the vans on roads either approaching Corbet Wood at approximately 10pm or leaving would be welcomed to identify the route of the criminals.”
