The footage appears to show a man taking the tins at around 1.10pm on Tuesday from Waters Upton Post Office and Stores, based at the Community Centre, in Upton Stones.

Katrina Baker, who manages the store which is run by the parish council, said: "A single male came into the shop three times on the day in total. He was in the store twice in the morning, looking around for people.

"We did not notice the boxes were missing until Thursday morning.

"The two charity tins were raising money for Hilbrae Pets Hotel and Hope House.

"It's hard to say how much money was in the tins at the time, but we believe around £20 to £25 in the one, and £10 to £15 in the other."

She added: "I am disgusted by this. It is the lowest form of theft. It is very sad that people will stoop so low to steal from charities."

A spokesman for Wellington and Rural Safer Neighbourhood Team said: "The incident is currently being investigated by West Mercia Police and we are hoping to bring this to an early resolution."

Anyone with information is asked to call West Mercia Police on 101, quoting incident reference number 300S of February 1. Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 or at crimestoppers-uk.org
