Police get more time to question four men over Shrewsbury stabbing

Police have been given more time to question four men who were arrested after two people were stabbed in Shrewsbury.

Six men were initially arrested after two men suffered stab injuries in a disturbance near to the Buttermarket in Shrewsbury in the early hours of Monday morning.

A 21-year-old and an 18-year-old were taken to hospital, one in a serious condition.

Two of the men arrested, all from outside Shrewsbury and aged between 19 and 28, were later released with no further action, but the other four are still being held on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.

Meanwhile, on the same day, a man in his 50s was arrested after two people suffered a stab and head injury in a disturbance on Hereford Road in the town.

The man was detained by a police dog and arrested at the scene under suspicion of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, but has since been released from arrest to receive hospital treatment.

Detective Inspector Peter Brophy said: "Police were called at about 11pm on January 1 to a report of a disturbance in Hereford Road, Shrewsbury.

"Officers attended with the police dog unit and two men in their 40s were found at the scene, one with a head injury and one with a stab wound, they were taken to hospital for treatment and have since been discharged.

"A police dog handler released a police dog which detained a man in his 50s.

"The man was arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and has been released from arrest while he receives treatment for injuries in hospital."
