Last week Mary Jean Felstead, 60, of Dolgwenith, Llanidloes, admitted failing to keep Jean’s Café in a layby between Rhayader and Llanidloes clean and in good repair.

She admitted failing to ensure all fittings and equipment used with food were clean and disinfected, and placing food on the market that was past its use by dates or was in a mouldy condition.

Felstead admitted the charges and was banned from running a food business.

Her business was sold in April, and then sold on to Michelle Roberts in August, who lives near Welshpool.

Mrs Roberts had no idea the former owner had been taken to court, or what sort of state the cafe used to be in, and was shocked to read about the saga.

She now wants to inform people that the cafe has been completely turned around and now has a four star hygiene rating.

Mrs Roberts said: "I was just shocked to read it. I had bust a gut to get the cafe up and running and then I read this.

"I was stunned about how bad it was previously, but now we have a four star hygiene rating.

"Now things have changed around, I hope people we realise it is different now and will start coming in."

Mrs Roberts admitted the court case puts things into perspective, after she noted some comments from customers.

She added: "Some people said, 'I would only come in here to buy a can of pop if I was desperate.'"

"But I just want to inform people now that things are different, and we are open as Mars Diner."

Currently with the cafe being a lay-by, it is covered in snow and unable to open, but Mrs Roberts is hoping to reopen sometime this week.
