Mark John Hemmings, of Tasley Close, was charged by West Mercia Police yesterday with one allegation of rape dating back to 1993 in Telford.

Hemmings spoke only to confirm his name and address when he appeared before Telford magistrates today.

An application for bail by his solicitor Mr Peter Hemming was refused.

The case relates to an alleged attack on a 37-year-old woman who was making her way to work shortly after 6pm on February 9, 1993. Despite a police investigation 24 years ago, no one was arrested.

The magistrates committed the matter to Shrewsbury Crown Court for a plea and case management hearing on November 6 and Hemmings was remanded in custody until then.
