Dwight Jeffrey-Shaw, 28, of Bainbridge Green, Shrewsbury, admitted assault with intent to cause actually bodily harm.

Shrewsbury Crown Court heard he repeatedly punched David Mullock during the attack outside the Pride Hill Shopping Centre in Shrewsbury at around 7pm on June 28 this year.

Jeffrey-Shaw also admitted breaching a restraining order, which had been put in place in February, for taking a vehicle without consent and drink driving.

CCTV footage of the attack was shown to the court.

Andrew Wilkins, prosecuting, said a number of punches were thrown during the attack on Mr Mullock.

Jeffrey-Shaw stamped on the victim's torso and also attempted to stamp on his head during the violent attack.

During the CCTV footage another person could be seen trying to intervene in the situation.

Mr Wilkins added that Jeffrey-Shaw has 59 previous convictions, with matters of common assault in 2011 and 2014.

He also received a custodial sentence in 2014 for affray.

Mr Wilkins said alongside the assault, Jeffrey-Shaw had breached his community order by failing to attend appointments with the probation service.

He had received the order for taking a vehicle without consent, driving at speed, drink driving and being involved in a road traffic collision on the A5 in 2016.

Laura Nash, defending said her client had an unenviable record.

She told the court he historically had drug problems, now had alcohol problems, and at one point was homeless.

He has asked for mental health intervention, with Ms Nash telling the court he had become reliant on alcohol.

She also said her client had stopped attending community order meetings because he did not get access to the help he wanted.

Since being in custody, she said he had made a number of self referrals and has been engaging with the mental health team, adding: "He hasn't just sat on his hands."

Judge Jonathan Gosling jailed Jeffrey-Shaw for nine months, saying he stamped on Mr Mullock while he was on the ground.

He said matters were made worse by his record.

Judge Gosling passed a sentence of six months in prison for actually bodily harm, and revoked the community order.

He then re-sentenced, sentencing Jeffrey-Shaw to two months in prison for the aggravated vehicle taking, and one month for drink driving to run consecutively.

He will be released on licence and under supervision after half of his sentence.
