The van drove slowly through Little Wenlock while objects were thrown from windows, the court was told.

Richard Hewitt appeared in court after he was identified as the registered keeper of the van, which was seen with two men inside on Wellington Road.

The 33-year-old, of Arthur Way, Woodside, Telford, denied depositing controlled waste without a permit.

Ms Aadhithya Anbahan, prosecuting, told Shrewsbury Crown Court the light blue Ford Transit was seen in May 2016 by village resident Timothy Stevens. He witnessed the driver throw a vacuum cleaner out of the side window while a man in the back of the van lobbed yellow refuse bags onto the road and hedgerows.

Mr Stevens said he pulled over and first notified the police then Telford & Wrekin Council. He said the car was travelling “slower than walking pace” and he had time to take a note of the number plate.

Council officers Mark Pearson and Richard Walmsley were asked by defence solicitor Miss Debra White about a letter found among the rubbish relating to a name and address in Arleston. Both said they had used the electoral roll to investigate but that no one was found at the address.

The court heard Hewitt claimed he was living in Wrexham at the time. The person named was not found registered as living at any address in the borough of Telford & Wrekin.

The case continues.
