Daniel Harbridge, 24, admitted assaulting the woman in January and admitted twice breaching a restraining order in May that was made to prevent him from contacting her.

Mr Hugh O’Brien Quinn, prosecuting, said the pair had been in a relationship which had ended, but they had kept in touch.

He said in the new year the pair had a falling out over the woman’s plans to go out with her friends.

The court heard that Harbridge struck her causing bruising to her eye.

He had also followed her car resulting in her phoning 999 and on one occasion he left a note on her car despite being banned from contacting her. Miss Debra White, mitigating, told the hearing at Shrewsbury Crown Court: “He is abiding by the condition of his bail.

“It is clear from a letter that he sent to the court that he is remorseful.

“He apologises for the hurt that has been caused to his ex-partner and her family and also to his own family.”

Harbridge,of Gwyn Close, Monkmoor, has previous cautions for shoplifting and battery.

Judge Peter Barrie gave him a two-year community order with a requirement to attend the Building Better Relationships programme for 29 sessions and attend 25 rehabilitation days. He must carry out 60 days unpaid work in the community, pay £500 compensation and £150 cost at a rate of £50 per month. He was also made subject to a new restraining order of five years.

“I have come to the conclusion that it is of no sense to send you to prison today, but I want you to be under no illusions.

It was a close run thing. It is of absolute importance that you do not have any contact of any kind with this lady,” Judge Barrie told him.
