Mazir Khan suffered four stab wounds to the body and was left with damage to his intestines and liver.

A jury was told the attack happened during a disturbance in the Arleston area of Wellington.

Mr Alex Chalk, prosecuting, said it was only thanks to the skill of doctors at Royal Stoke University Hospital that Mr Khan survived.

"So ferocious was the attack the inevitable conclusion is that the man holding the knife intended to kill. The prosecution say this was Mohammed Kabir Zaman," said Mr Chalk.

Zaman, 27, of Victoria Avenue, Wellington, denies attempting to murder Mr Khan, a charge of wounding with intent and an allegation of affray.

The jury at Stafford Crown Court was told at about 9pm on April 14, a friend of the victim, Amjad Hussain, called at his address in the Arleston area but Mr Khan was not there. Moments later Zaman is alleged to have smashed a window and mirror of Mr Hussain's Mercedes with a hammer.

Sometime about 10.30pm a car pulled up on the pavement outside the Tiger Bowl Chinese Takeaway where Mr Khan's two brothers – Azaer and Abed – both worked.

The restaurant door burst open and Zaman, again said to be armed with a hammer, was described as swinging it about and leaning over the counter.

Mr Chalk said that when told about the incident Mr Khan went to the Tiger Bowl where he saw a black Vauxhall Astra with a man he knew as Shaquil Sultan behind the wheel who made "a gun" hand gesture as he drove off.

Mr Khan gave chase in his works van and later at lights at road works in Haybridge Road there was a minor collision between the two vehicles.

A short time later Mr Khan was making his way home in his own BMW and was confronted in Woollam Road by a group of men.

There were cars in the road and the BMW collided with a Ford Fiesta as it tried to drive away. The windows of the BMW were smashed and when Mr Khan got out of his car he was attacked and repeatedly stabbed.

The trial continues.
