Facebook sex offender jailed after grooming teenage girls

North Shropshire | News | Published:

A sex offender who tried to groom the teenage daughters of his former schoolfriends by befriending their mothers on Facebook has been jailed.

Robert Jeffrey

Robert Andrew Jeffrey, 46, contacted the women on the site and then tried to chat to their daughters, Shrewsbury Crown Court heard yesterday.

When his plan was discovered he set up another account in the name of 21-year-old Matt Turner and again tried to contact the four 15 and 16-year-old girls.

That meant Jeffrey, formerly of Smithfield Road, Market Drayton, had broken the terms of his Sexual Offences Prevention Order from another earlier offence.

He fled to Scotland to avoid arrest but was eventually tracked down on August 23.

Yesterday he admitted six charges relating to failure to comply with the order and was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison.

Judge Peter Barrie, sentencing, said: "You have shown over the years a complete failure to take seriously the orders the court has made."
