Lewis Gilbert has joined CEL Group as a level two supply chain warehouse operative in conjunction with Juniper Training and with support from the Ladder for Shropshire.

Lewis started his apprenticeship on February 1 after impressing Ryan Clark, head of engineering and quality UK at CEL, during his interview.

Ryan, who has become Lewis’s mentor, said: “At my previous place of work, I was the apprentice coordinator where we would take on three or four apprentices a year so I’ve conducted a few interviews.

"I’ve personally found, while taking note of qualifications, whatever has been achieved usually has little influence on my impressions on a candidate. Equally, work experience from a someone applying for an apprenticeship is usually very little due to their age which I completely understand.

"Taking these points into account, I usually like to just have a sit down with a relaxed chat, finding out about the candidates personality, hobbies and what drives them. Also, I have to judge on attitude and impressions, not just first ones, but throughout the interview.

“We pretty much knew instantly that Lewis was for us when we met him.”

Lewis said: "My first week went really well and I felt comfortable. They were willing to help and Ryan and the team was there whenever I needed direction or help.

"This week I have been unloading containers, wrapping pallets and picking the stock from customers.

"It is very different to what I did before, I have some experience on the manufacturing side, now I am supplying, storing and preparing for the customer. It is definitely a lot cleaner this side.

"I feel like I am in a positive place and learning so much every day. It is keeping me busy and focused. I hope gain my qualifications in warehousing, get my fork lift license and get a full-time job here with CEL."

Simon Cartwright, sales director at CEL Group, added: “Lewis was happy to engage with us right from the start, he is a good communicator and I can feel that he really wants this apprenticeship."
