Ruby Ankers, 21, from Whixall, came first place in the Social Media Hair and Beauty Awards 2021 – a worldwide awards competition for the industry.

The winners were announced on Friday, and Ruby said she couldn't believe it when they read her name out as the winner of 'Hairdresser of the Year'.

Ruby has been working hard to be a hairdresser since she left school, and has been self-employed since last month – she said she loves her job and wants to inspire others to take up hairdressing.

"The Social Media Hair and Beauty Awards were open worldwide and I had to send off pictures of my work and people voted for their favourite," she said. "I am really chuffed. I couldn't believe it.

"I found out on Friday, April 30, it was such a shock."

Ruby said she has had a hard time during lockdown as hairdressers were not able to work. But the 21 year-old said her business is going really well now, and she is busier than ever.

"It has been a tough year in terms of lockdown and not being able to make any money, being self employed, but I am so glad that I did it," she said. "It's been amazing since lockdown has lifted.

"As well as doing people's hair, having to run social media accounts for my business is a pretty much full-time job in itself. From posting all my work to interacting, it's amazing for promotion.

"I cried my eyes out watching the awards on the live stream, I couldn't believe it when they read out my name."
