Bridgnorth businesses look to boost trade as visitor numbers low after lockdown

The reopening of Bridgnorth was a tale of two cities as traders on one side of the town think of ways to increase footfall following a "demoralising" start to the end of lockdown restrictions.

Businesses in Low Town said the delay to the reopening of Bridgnorth Cliff Railway, which transports shoppers to and from High Town, along with a lack of eateries reopening has contributed to poor trade on that side of the town.

Discussions have started between shops, residents and Shropshire Council looking at ways to make Low Town a more "vibrant place" for visitors.

Carolle Lee-Jones, owner of The French Room – selling interior design pieces, authentic French items and local produce – said ideas included hanging bunting or a public event.

"It's been really tough for us so far," said Carolle, who runs the shop on Bridge Street.

"All of us in Low Town, as you come over the bridge and turn right, are really affected as few of the bars and eateries have reopened.

"Also the cliff railway only reopening this week has massively affected our footfall as people couldn't get to us – parking is another issue we're facing.

"Traders are coming together and I've contacted Shropshire Council about ways of making Low Town a more vibrant place.

"Nothing else is happening so many people, including local residents, want to bring back some history and energy – possibly through a fete."

'Slow and steady'

Meanwhile, business in High Town has been described as "comfortable and safe".

Sally Themans, of tourism campaign Love Bridgnorth, added: "Some shops have had really busy days reopening for the first time last week.

"In general I think it has been slow and steady for many, but a bounce back does seem to be in progress.

"We have also welcomed new shops opening in what can only be the most challenging trading conditions we've ever known, which is really encouraging."

Jenny Bone, of My Little Wedding Shop in Castle Terrace, High Town, said: "Things have been really positive for us.

"We're opening by appointment only – due to the nature of the business with trying on dresses – and weddings are still slightly postponed but we've had new customers book in with us.

"People are definitely starting to plan for events later on in the year and early next year.

"It's been a positive start and everyone's been very respectful of the rules, wearing face masks and using the hand sanitiser stations in the shop."
