Shropshire Chamber of Commerce, Shropshire Council and Telford & Wrekin Council have all highlighted the importance apprenticeships have in getting people on the career ladder.

It comes as events have been taking place during this week's National Apprenticeship Week, an annual event that seeks to highlight the work being done by employers and apprentices across the UK.

One of the events – the Shropshire Council Virtual Apprenticeship Awards – was held virtually yesterday and celebrated the achievements and success of apprenticeships at the council and schools.

James Walton, Shropshire Council’s interim executive director of resources, said: “Across the country, Covid-19 has raised significant challenges for people seeking to enter the job market. With many people working from home, it has been particularly hard for people to develop new and existing key skills highly sought-after by employers.

“I truly believe that apprenticeships will play a huge part in getting people back into work next year, enabling them to develop the skills and on the job experience that they need whilst being paid.

“We’re proud to offer apprenticeships and invest in our future here at Shropshire Council.”

Councillor Shirley Reynolds, Telford & Wrekin Council cabinet member for children, young people, education and lifelong learning, said: “Apprenticeships are for all ages and offer opportunity to study at all levels from level two up to degree level in a range of sectors. For many, the apprenticeship route is not such an obvious choice. But for those who are motivated to get started in the job market, an apprenticeship is an excellent way of gaining essential experience, earn while you work and gain a nationally recognised qualification."

Since its relaunch in October, businesses across the county have come forward to recruit apprentices through the Ladder for Shropshire campaign.

Richard Sheehan, chief executive of Shropshire Chamber of Commerce, added: "As we continue to move towards the new world of business, the shape of our workforce and its evolution has never been more important.

"Our young people are our future economic drivers, business owners and managers and will benefit from the rounded approach that an apprenticeship can provide, adding value to the employer adding value to Shropshire."
