Matt Potts, business growth and investment manager, told members of the Great Outdoors Strategy Board yesterday that some of the aims of the economic growth strategy are 12 per cent economic growth, 3,700 new jobs, £300 million in private sector investment and 1,375 new homes a year, all by 2021.

Mr Potts, on the economic growth strategy, said: "The economy in Shropshire is by no means small, but there is a potential to do more."

Other objectives of the strategy are to "support and grow new and existing businesses", "attract inward investment" and "develop and retain talent and skills", he added.

"One of the challenges that we have is retaining some of our young people and getting them to come back to Shropshire post qualifications," he added.

Future opportunities for the county's economic growth will be through the Shrewsbury Flax Mill's office space, and Ironbridge Power Station's potential for houses, as well as Shrewsbury's Big Town Plan, Mr Potts told members.

He added that other opportunities could be through the M54 corridor, Clive Barracks and Oswestry Innovation Park.
