That is the view of Christopher Greenough, commercial director at Shrewsbury-based Salop Design & Engineering Ltd.

Mr Greenough said Shropshire has reaped the rewards of investment in infrastructure and skills.

"Shropshire has had a better record than most recently, when it comes to attracting business to the region, with both the Marches LEP and local councils bringing companies and jobs in. And these are jobs that need skills, higher paid, technically challenges roles that will allow us to keep our talented youngsters in the region.

"Shropshire is now seen as the next growth region for many businesses, on the doorstep of the 'Midlands Powerhouse', with proven real investment in skills and infrastructure, points that look favourable to companies wishing to grow.

"People and business realise what we in Shropshire have always known, that our region is not just a great place to live, but has exciting opportunities for those willing to work and make a career.

"I see tremendous opportunities ahead for our regions businesses, the next 12 months will create winners and losers, but Shropshire business has always been resilient, reactive and fast moving, taking opportunities as they arise.

"Shropshire has family-run businesses with good track records, strong balance sheets and skilled work forces, and is now also attracting larger business and major investments. This means growth for our economy, increased chances for the next generation, and a bright future ahead."

Mr Greenough, whose firm manufactures pressings and assemblies, said the manufacturing sector faces some "interesting times" over the next 12 months.

"With the strive for productivity to remain competitive, a look to automation and connectivity to keep up with Industry 4.0, and the ever nearing deadline for Brexit on the horizon, it is certainly not going to be an easy road ahead.

"But for smaller and medium companies, SMEs who are willing to look to different sectors and take the chance to invest now, there will be great gains.

"Manufacturing has great opportunities for free thinking, talented people, and the sector is changing rapidly. There are more varied roles within the sector than people know, and my aim is to help educate the next generation to the fantastic opportunities available. An apprenticeship route is a great way to get to know a company and its workings, and while you earn and learn, you can also end up with a loan free degree.

"So whether you go on to university or choose an apprenticeship, have a look at manufacturing and engineering – it is a great sector to be in," he added.
