'Water' difference to Telford skyline

It has completely transformed the skyline of Southwater in the last few months - now Telford's new Southwater Square, the Travelodge hotel and the new retail unit are nearing completion.

The Square, a green space with art and water features, will be open to the public within the next seven weeks.

It will be unveiled to the public ready for Spring into St George’s Day on April 22.

The new hotel is expected to be handed over to Travelodge in June.

Telford & Wrekin Council said it had also received a lot of interest in the retail unit, which is being built as part of the hotel.

Councillor Lee Carter, cabinet member with responsibility for economic development, said the work would increase the appeal of the area to visitors and residents.

“Work is progressing well on the new Southwater Square with new public space, art, lighting and water features, which we expect to help to attract even more people to Telford as well as hosting a range of events,” he said.

“We expect this to open in the later part of April, in time for our first major event of the year Spring into St George’s Day on April 22.

“Equally work on the new 68-bed Travelodge that is next to the new Square is also progressing well and is on track for the council to hand the building over to the hotel in June, creating more new jobs in addition the 400 plus that Southwater has already created.

“There is also strong market interest in the new retail unit that is part of the hotel that will overlook the Southwater lake and Square.

“Once complete, these will further increase Southwater’s appeal for visitors and residents.”
